Crafts of the Region of Thiès

Located 70 km from Dakar, the region of Thiès is one of the fourteen administrative regions in the West of Senegal, in a ring around the peninsula of Cape Verde (region of Dakar). It covers an area of 6,601 km2 (3.4% of the country) and is bounded on North by the region of Louga, South by the region of Fatick, East by the regions of Diourbel and Fatick, and West by the region of Dakar and the Atlantic Ocean.

The crafts of the region of Thiès is very dynamic with enormous potential. Each department of the region has a different specialty.

The department of Mbour is marked by the predominance of fine craftsmanship and service that holds enormous potential due to the tourism, fishing and construction industries. It is a craft-oriented tourism with its three craft villages: the commnunal craft village, Laobé, and the Saly craft market.

The department of Thiès, as it has a long history with the railroad, is more oriented towards the work of metal and wrought iron. Most entrepreneurs in the metal industry are former heads of the board of railway.
